Mongolia, tortoise monument ruins of the Mongol capital of Karakorum, Upper Orkhon River, founded c.1220 by Ogodei, third son of Genghis Khan. This stone turtle (there are two remaining out of four) is located northwest of the monastry and symbolise eternity and protection. Originally they numbered four, and marked the boundaries of the city of Karakorum. They acted as the basas for inscribed memorial slabs (now missing). The bricks and stones from the ruins of Karakorum were used to build the monumental walls of the Erdene Zuu monastry nearby (and seen in the background here), so in that way the old city lives on.

Mongolia, Karakorum, Erdene Zuu Monastery. Located in the Orkhon valley in northern Ovorkhangai, Karakorum was formerly a great capital city built by Ogodei Khan (Genghis' successor and third son) in 1235. Erdene Zuu means 'Precious Buddha', since the main object of veneration at Erdene Zuu is the Zandan Zuu (Sandlewood Buddha). It is Mongolia's oldest Buddhist monastery, founded in 1586 by Abtai Khan, and was one of the few monasteries to survive, partly intact, the destruction of religious establishments in the 1930's. From 1941-90 the religious life of the monastery was virtually shut down, and Erdene Zuu became a national museum with no monks in residence. In 1997, the government decided to restore the monastery.

Statue of St Barbara, St Margaret and St Elizabeth,1707. On the Charles Bridge (Karluv Most).Prague's most familiar monument, now a haven for craft and trinket stalls, connects the Old Town with the Little Quarter. Until 1741, Charles Bridge was the only crossing over the Vltava. It is 520m (1,706ft) long and is built of sandstone blocks, rumoured to be strengthened by mixing mortar with eggs. The bridge was commissioned by Charles IV in 137 to replace the Judith Bridge and built by Peter Parler. The bridge's original decoration was a simple cross. The first statue, of St John Nepomuk, was added in 1683, inspired by Bernini's sculptures on Rome's Ponte Sant'Angelo. Many of the statues on the bridge have been replaced with copies; the originals are kept in the Lapidarium of the National Museum.

Dominating the Old Town Square are the magnificent steeples of this historic church. The present Gothic Church was started in 1365 and soon became associated with the reform movement in Bohemia. From the early 15th century until 1620 Tyn was the main Hussite Church in Prague. It was completed during the reign of George of Podebrady (1436-71), the one and only Hussite King of Bohemia. He adorned the high stone gable with a statue of himself and a giant gilded kalich (chalice), the mascot of all Hussite sects. After the Protestants' crushing defeat at the Battle of Bila Hora, the chalice was melted down to provide a newly ensconced statue of the Virgin Mary with a golden halo. The Danish astrologer Tycho Brahe (1546-1601) is buried in Tyn Church.
